Georgia Laurie, 31, who bravely rescued her twin sister from a crocodile attack by repeatedly striking the reptile in its face, is set to receive a bravery honor in the King’s inaugural Civilian Gallantry List.
The courageous act unfolded when Laurie courageously intervened after a crocodile pulled her sister, Melissa, underwater while they were swimming in a lagoon in Mexico in June 2021. Despite the animal attacking them multiple times, Laurie fought back fiercely, saving her sister from further harm.

Although both sisters sustained serious injuries during the ordeal, they have since made significant recoveries. Yet, the mental scars from the traumatic incident linger.
Expressing her surprise and gratitude upon receiving the honor, Ms. Laurie, from Sandhurst, Berkshire, remarked, “It’s an honor, I was so shocked as well when I received the letter because I didn’t see it coming, I didn’t expect it.” She emphasized the shared nature of the recognition, acknowledging her sister’s strength and resilience throughout the ordeal.
Recalling the harrowing experience, Melissa described the moment of realization when they encountered the crocodile and the subsequent terrifying attack. She vividly recounted the fear and desperation she felt as the crocodile dragged her underwater, inflicting severe wounds.
Despite her heroic actions, Georgia struggled with despair upon seeing her sister’s unresponsive state, grappling with thoughts of hopelessness. The arrival of a rescue boat brought relief, as Melissa was safely brought aboard with Georgia by her side.
The King’s Civilian Gallantry List, which includes nine individuals this year, marks a significant recognition of acts of bravery, including those of Pc Zach Printer and Pc Steven Denniss, who displayed exceptional courage in the face of danger.
