I stumbled upon this couple on social media, and I was impressed by how much they love and care for each other.
Some relationships you come across online make you stop scrolling for a moment. Not necessarily because the couple is famous or because they have a perfect-looking life, but because something about the way they look at each other, support each other, and navigate life together speaks louder than words.
That was how I felt when I came across Charisma Jamison and her husband, Cole Sydnor. Their story is particularly fascinating because their marriage exists in circumstances that many people may consider difficult.
Marriage itself is not an easy institution. It requires patience, sacrifice, communication, understanding and, above all, the willingness to keep choosing the same person even when life does not look the way you imagined it would.
Now imagine adding disability to that equation. It introduces another layer of responsibility, adjustment and sacrifice.
But when you watch Cole and Charisma, you do not simply see disability. You see two people who have chosen to build a life together, and perhaps that is what makes their story so beautiful.
When Life Changes in an Instant
Cole Sydnor’s story is one that reminds us how quickly life can change. In 2011, at just 16 years old, Cole became a C5/C6 quadriplegic after a shallow-water diving accident in Virginia’s James River.

At 16, most young people are thinking about school, friends, sports, relationships and the future. Life is still largely ahead of them, and there is an expectation that they will have the freedom to pursue their dreams in whatever way they choose.
But one accident can change everything. Cole suddenly had to learn how to live with a completely different physical reality.
The accident did not simply affect his body. It meant that many of the ordinary things people take for granted would require assistance, adaptation and perseverance.
But something important remained. Cole was still Cole.
His disability changed some parts of his life, but it did not take away his personality, dreams, ambitions, or ability to love and be loved.
And years later, something else happened that he probably could not have imagined when he was 16. He met the woman who would eventually become his wife.
The Unexpected Meeting
In 2017, Cole met Charisma at a rehabilitation facility where she worked as a tech and inpatient therapist. Cole was using the gym there for his workouts.
At the time, neither of them could have known exactly where their encounter would lead. There was some initial flirting at a hospital gala, and eventually Cole made the next move.
He messaged Charisma on Instagram. That message led to their first date. And sometimes, the most significant relationships in our lives begin in the simplest ways.

A conversation, a message, a meeting. A moment that does not appear particularly significant when it happens but later becomes a turning point in our lives.
For Cole and Charisma, that initial connection gradually developed into something deeper. They built a strong bond based on love, mutual empowerment and shared positivity. And in 2020, they got married.
Marriage Is More Than a Wedding
I think one of the reasons their story resonates with me is because it reminds us that marriage is much bigger than a wedding ceremony.
A wedding can be beautiful. There are beautiful clothes, beautiful pictures, music, dancing, family members, friends and celebrations.
But eventually, the wedding day ends. The guests go home, decorations come down, photographs become memories, and two people are left to live the life they promised to live together.
That is when marriage really begins. Marriage means learning to live with another person’s weaknesses as well as their strengths.
It means making adjustments, sacrificing sometimes, being patient when you are tired and being present when your partner is struggling.
It means understanding that there will be seasons when one person gives more because the other person needs more.
For Cole and Charisma, these realities can be even more demanding because disability is part of their everyday lives.
There are accessibility challenges, caregiving responsibilities, physical limitations, and there are also the misconceptions that come from people who do not understand their relationship.
Yet, despite all of these things, they continue to build their life together.
“Is She His Nurse?”
One misconception they regularly encounter is that people assume Charisma is Cole’s paid nurse rather than his wife.
It may sound like a simple misunderstanding, but it reveals something deeper about the way society sometimes looks at people with disabilities.
Sometimes we see the wheelchair before we see the person, the disability before we see the personality.
We see the assistance someone needs before we see the dreams they have, but Cole’s life challenges that perception.
He is not simply a disabled person being taken care of. He is a husband, a man with dreams and ambitions, a friend, someone’s partner and most importantly, he is a person deserving of love, dignity and the opportunity to live a full life.
Charisma, on the other hand, is not simply his caregiver. She is his wife, partner and someone who has chosen to share her life with him.
Their relationship reminds us that disability does not cancel a person’s ability to experience love, companionship, intimacy, marriage and happiness.
The Bigger Lesson
Marriage is not about finding someone whose life will always be convenient for you. It is about finding someone with whom you are willing to face life honestly and courageously. Not about finding someone who will never need you, but being willing to be there when they do.
And it is not about finding someone whose life will never change. It is about being willing to grow and adapt when it does.
Cole and Charisma’s story does not tell us that disability is easy. It does not tell us that marriage is easy.
The story does not tell us that love eliminates every difficulty but tells us something much simpler and perhaps much more powerful.
Life may give us circumstances we never planned for, but with love, commitment, grace and God, we can still build something beautiful.
Perhaps that is what marriage was always meant to be, not two perfect people living a perfect life, but two imperfect people choosing each other, helping each other, and trusting God through every season.
Romans 8:28 reminds us that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
When life changes the plans we made, when circumstances become difficult, and when the road ahead looks nothing like what we imagined, will we still have the courage to love, to serve, to trust God, and to remain faithful to the people He has placed in our lives?
