Human beings are naturally quick to judge based on appearances. Many times our dealing with people is based on their ethnicity, appearance, or our perception of them. That is why, when Jesus, the Saviour of the world, appeared, many dismissed Him simply because of His background. This mindset led Nathaniel to ask if anything good could come out of Nazareth upon hearing about Jesus. Yet, from that place of “nothing good,” came the greatest good the world has ever known.
In the same way, we often write people off because of the surface image we see. Let’s look at Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, for example. Known globally as a gangster rapper, many associated him only with violence and controversy. So when you learnt that he co-authored The 50th Law with Robert Greene, it was natural to feel sceptical. However, reading the book gives one a different impression of 50 Cent.
One of the most striking ideas in that book is in Chapter Three: “Turn shit into sugar”, the art of extracting advantage from adversity. It teaches that every hardship carries the seed of an opportunity, and with the right perspective, we can turn our mess into a message.
Life is truly a matter of perspective, and as we have come to see, most time we get discouraged and overwhelmed over the things we lack. However, the truth is: embedded within your disadvantage is a unique advantage. Not having much money, for example, can teach you discipline, innovation, and effective management skills that people with a surplus never learn. As Thomas Edison once said after his factory burned down, forcing him to start all over again, “There is great value in disaster.” He chose to see tragedy as a reset button and an opportunity to build something even better.
The question then becomes: What are your struggles? What are your disadvantages? How can you flip them into stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks? That is the mindset of the underdog who uses everything, even pain, lack, mockery, and setbacks, as fuel to rise. It is about turning your mess into a message.
This is the ultimate alchemy of life: taking negatives and transforming them into strength, wisdom, power, and influence. As the Bible says in Psalm 30:5, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Yes, good things can come from terrible places. Light can break out of darkness. And your own story, no matter how rough it is right now, can still be turned into something beautiful, powerful, and impactful.
It all begins with a shift in the way you see, and this will help in turning your mess into a message.
