The greatest tragedy to befall a person is to have eyes but lack vision. – Helen Keller
The eagle is often described as a majestic and elegant bird. Its claws and strength are a tremendous source of inspiration for many. However, beyond its strength and majesty, one of the eagle’s greatest strengths is its vision. Research shows that eagles possess an exceptional 20/5 vision, unlike humans who can only boast of 20/20 vision. This means that an eagle can see objects from 20 feet (6 meters) away that humans can only see from 5 feet (1.5 meters) away. This remarkable vision allows the eagle to dominate the skies, attacking its prey with precise accuracy.
Like the eagle, humans can learn the importance of vision. Everything in life is created twice: first in the mind and then in reality. Even in Genesis 1:26-31, God had a vision before He created man: “Let us make man in our image and likeness.” If the Almighty God can have a vision to actualize His plans, what stops us from having a vision to navigate our journey through life?
The late televangelist Myles Munroe once stated, “The greatest gift God ever gave us is not the gift of sight but the gift of vision.” If God has given us the gift of vision, why do some of us labor in areas where we should flourish? The answer is simple: many of us have not yet discovered how to develop our vision in life. Until we do, we will be like the proverbial rolling stone that gathers no moss, stumbling through life without direction. To avoid living like the children of Sisyphus, the following steps are necessary to establish a clear vision for ourselves.
Start by asking deep questions
Research has proven that asking questions stimulates critical thinking. When we ask ourselves deep, meaningful questions, we engage in a process of introspection that helps us provide answers. This, in turn, improves our understanding of our lives, clarifying our vision and goals.
Look for a Vision Statement
Many organizations have a vision statement outlining their long-term plans and goals, typically spanning five to ten years or longer. Just as companies are considered brands, individuals are also brands. Therefore, individuals must set both long-term and short-term plans. Setting realistic targets allows us to measure our progress and stay on track with our aspirations.
Avoid Distractions
Nothing kills a dream faster than distractions. To hold onto your vision, your focus must be unwavering. Approach your work with renewed zeal and vigor, ensuring that you stay committed to reaching the heights you dream of.
Give It Time
Time is essential for realizing your vision. Just as a farmer cannot plant today and harvest the same day, your vision needs time to grow and develop. Patience is key; allow your vision to go through its natural cycle of growth.
The importance of vision cannot be overstated. As Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.” Embrace your vision and enjoy the fulfillment that comes from pursuing your dreams. Selah.
