I am a lover of football, and it is only natural that I draw analogies from the beautiful game. Beyond the entertainment it offers, football is filled with powerful stories of resilience, leadership, and redemption that inspire life lessons.
One such story is that of Oliver Glasner, whose journey is a remarkable tale of survival, reinvention, and triumph against the odds.
From the Pitch to the Sideline
Glasner spent his playing career in Austria, most notably as a loyal servant of SV Ried. His life as a player, however, took a dramatic turn in August 2011. During a routine aerial duel in a league match, he suffered a life-threatening brain haemorrhage that required emergency surgery.
Although he survived, doctors made it clear that his playing career was over.
Rather than allow that moment to define the rest of his life in tragedy, Glasner chose a different path. He redirected his passion for football into coaching, carrying with him a renewed philosophy: football should not only be about pressure and results, but also about joy, freedom, and expression.
Building a Legacy
Glasner’s managerial journey began in Austria, where he quickly earned a reputation for discipline, organisation, and progressive football. His rise continued in Germany, where he achieved the defining milestone of his career at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Oliver Glasner
In 2022, he led the club on a memorable UEFA Europa League campaign, overcoming elite opposition and culminating in a dramatic final victory over Rangers. Along the way, Frankfurt stunned European giants, including Barcelona at Camp Nou, in one of the competition’s most remarkable underdog runs.
A Fairy Tale in England
In this inspiring account of his career progression, Glasner later takes charge of Crystal Palace in the Premier League in 2024. He inherits a team struggling for consistency but quickly reshapes the club’s identity.
Rather than burdening his players with fear of failure, he encourages them to play with courage, express themselves freely, and embrace mistakes as part of growth.
That philosophy transforms the team. Under his leadership, Palace achieves historic success, winning the FA Cup in a stunning upset against Manchester City. This was followed by a Community Shield victory over Liverpool. These triumphs mark the club’s first major silverware in its long history.
Glasner’s story is more than football success. It is a reminder that life’s most painful setbacks can become the foundation for extraordinary comebacks if met with resilience, vision, and courage to begin again.
