Only you can make it happen

Make it happenBy Brian K. Jones

In this individualistic society we live, there is a tendency to proclaim ourselves to be the masters of our domain. We pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and we make it happen. We create our own destiny! Right? “If it wasn’t for me… it would have all fallen apart!”

Have you heard or spoken these words? It sounds arrogant, but truly many of us live by the philosophy of individualism. Me, Myself and I! Yet, have you noticed that we have begun to tear away at the fabric of family and togetherness. The old adage that… “it takes a village to raise a child,” has been replaced by “Mind your business, I will take care of my own.” This is not the sole cause of our deteriorating society, but it is an intricate part of it. It breeds selfishness and causes us to live in isolation. No longer do we look to build our communities, but seek to build the island of “Me.”

I have even found that our churches tend to take on an “us against the world” mentality. Forgetting that we are all the body of Christ. It would seem to me that we would look to foster togetherness and unity. Yet, we compete. Putting aside what is good for all, for that which is good for me or us. Paul, encourages us saying, “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” Ephesians 4:1-6 (King James Version).

Yes, we are individuals, uniquely made with unique gifts, but we are all one. No one gets to where they are without encouragement, guidance or influence. It took you watching someone else to see that you can do that thing and more. God placed them there. God put that spark in you to be more and do more. He is our source of inspiration. That path you are on, He guided you to. All to build the spirit of unity.

Let us not forget, from whence we came. It is so easy to buy into this individualistic ideology. We have to fight against an over-inflated self-efficacy. Which tells me that I am more than capable of handling everything on my own. We have got to know that if we don’t accomplish, that which God has assigned, someone else is waiting to accomplish it.

This is all about control, which we have known. Our lives are in God’s hands and without Him, we can do nothing! Let us forgo the idea of “Me, myself and I,” and return to the belief that the village is stronger than one. Our community is more than one house. Our country is more than one state.

With this being said, I suppose the title is true… Nobody… but you, can make it happen. If we all accept the responsibility, as a part of the body, to make our village strong, build the community and endeavor to bring our churches together we can make it happen. It’s time to stitch the fabric back up. We can’t afford to be called children of God, yet only think of ourselves. Nobody but YOU, can make this happen!
