Amidst challenging circumstances stemming from the aftermath of catching COVID-19 in December 2020 and losing her job as a cleaner, Kelly Thomson, a mother of two, found herself in dire straits, resulting in hospitalizations due to malnutrition. With limited financial resources, Thomson struggled to afford fresh food, often making do with less than $50 per week for herself and her children, supplemented by assistance from the food bank. The financial strain forced her to make the difficult choice of eating only once a day to ensure her children were fed, leading to overwhelming stress and despair.
After mustering the courage to share her plight, Thomson, 43, received an outpouring of support from compassionate strangers, who encouraged her to start an online donation appeal. Initially hoping to raise a modest sum, she was astonished as donations flooded in from around the globe, quickly surpassing her expectations. The fundraiser exceeded £8,000 ($9,969.09), leaving Thomson overwhelmed with gratitude and relief. With the funds received, she settled her debts, regained financial stability, and experienced a newfound sense of security and peace of mind.
The generosity of strangers not only alleviated Thomson’s immediate financial burdens but also restored her hope for the future. With her cupboards now stocked with fresh food, Thomson and her family are enjoying three nutritious meals a day, marking a significant improvement in their well-being. Overwhelmed by the unexpected support, Thomson closed the donation page once the target was reached, expressing her sincere appreciation to all who contributed to transforming her family’s circumstances.
She looks forward to rebuilding her life and returning to work, filled with gratitude for the kindness and compassion shown to her and her children during their time of need.
