“Ah, my lord, what shall we do now?” he cried out to Elisha. “Don’t be afraid,” Elisha answered, “for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Then Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, LORD, so that he may see” – 2 Kings 6:15–17.
Have you ever wished God would warn you before trouble arrived?
Throughout Scripture, we see that God never delights in leaving His people confused or vulnerable. He is a God who guides, protects, and prepares those who seek Him. One of the ways He does this is through spiritual discernment and prophetic direction.
The story of Elisha in 2 Kings 6 reminds us that while our physical eyes may see danger, God’s perspective reveals a completely different reality. What you see determines how you respond. It shapes your faith, your decisions, and often your victory.
May the Lord open our eyes today to see beyond what is visible and our ears to hear His voice more clearly.
Does God Still Speak Today?
Some people believe prophetic ministry ended with the Old Testament. Scripture, however, tells a different story.
The New Testament introduces people such as the Prophet Agabus and the prophetess Anna. Jesus Himself demonstrated prophetic insight throughout His ministry, and the apostles regularly ministered under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
God still leads His people today. While His written Word remains our highest authority, He continues to guide believers through the Holy Spirit, biblical wisdom, conviction, spiritual discernment, dreams, circumstances, and other means that always agree with Scripture.
The Prophetic as God’s Divine Intelligence
One of the remarkable functions of the prophetic is spiritual protection. God often warns His people before danger becomes visible. He may speak through Scripture, prayer, dreams, visions, godly counsel, or the quiet prompting of the Holy Spirit. At other times, He impresses upon someone’s heart the need to pray, intercede, or take action.
The purpose is never to satisfy curiosity or promote sensationalism. God’s guidance is given to protect, direct, strengthen, and prepare His people.
Elisha Exposed the Enemy’s Plans
The events of 2 Kings 6 provide one of the clearest examples of God’s supernatural guidance.
Each time the king of Aram planned an attack against Israel, God revealed the strategy to Elisha. The prophet immediately informed the king of Israel, allowing the army to prepare before the enemy arrived.
This happened repeatedly. Frustrated, the king of Aram gathered his officers and demanded to know who was leaking military secrets.
One officer answered: “Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.”
Nothing is hidden from God. He knew every strategy before it unfolded, revealing only what His servant needed to know to protect His people.
God Still Guides His People
God has not changed. He still desires to lead those who walk closely with Him.
Sometimes His guidance concerns our families. Other times it relates to decisions, ministries, communities, or even nations. His direction always serves His purposes and brings glory to Him.
When we ignore God’s voice, we often walk through life without spiritual awareness. When we cultivate intimacy with Him, we become more sensitive to His leading and better prepared for life’s challenges.
Why Spiritual Discernment Matters
We live in a world filled with uncertainty. Not every battle is physical. Some require wisdom, prayer, patience, and discernment.
God wants His people to recognize His leading so they can avoid unnecessary pitfalls, stand firm against spiritual attacks, and cooperate with His plans rather than react in fear.
Like Elisha, believers can experience confidence because they know God sees what they cannot.
Seeing Beyond the Natural
When the enemy surrounded Elisha, his servant panicked.
Elisha did not. He already knew heaven’s army had surrounded them.
When God opened the servant’s eyes, he saw horses and chariots of fire covering the mountains around them. Fear disappeared because perspective changed.
Many of our fears shrink when we begin to see our circumstances through God’s promises rather than our limitations.
A Word of Caution
Scripture also warns us that not everyone claiming to speak for God truly represents Him.
Jesus warned about false prophets, and the apostles encouraged believers to test every spirit.
Every prophetic message should align with Scripture, glorify Christ, produce godly fruit, and withstand biblical examination.
Never follow personalities blindly. Follow Christ faithfully.
God has never intended His people to walk through life alone or without direction.
As we remain rooted in His Word and cultivate a close relationship with Him, He provides wisdom, discernment, peace, and guidance for every season.
May the Lord open our eyes to recognize His presence, trust His promises, and walk confidently in His direction each day.
