Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi, was involved in a helicopter crash on Sunday. The helicopter crash happened near the border with Azerbaijan.
Raisi was seen staring out of the window of the aircraft, which was moving to Iran’s East Azerbaijan province near Jolfa, around 375 miles northwest of Tehran when it crashed.
According to Iranian state media, the helicopter was seen after a frantic search mission many hours after reports of the incident first emerged. However, there is no news yet if the Iranian leader was discovered or if there are any survivors.
According to available information, the helicopter was one of three convoys, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, Imam, Seyyed Mohammad-Ali Al-Hashem, and other high-ranking officials who were reportedly in the helicopter with the President.
Their lives are at risk after the crash over mountain terrain, an Iranian official told Reuters. All army and Iranian guard resources were used for the search efforts for the helicopter.
According to an Iranian official, the helicopter crashed as it was crossing mountain terrain in heavy fog on the way back from a visit to the border with Azerbaijan.
The official stated that the lives of Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian were at risk following the helicopter crash.
‘We are still hopeful but information coming from the crash site is very concerning,’ said the official, speaking anonymously.
Rescuers found it difficult to reach the site due to poor weather conditions in the area.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has stated that he is praying for President Ebrahim Raisi’s safety.
