“The Lord says, ‘I will give you back what you lost to the swarming locusts, the hopping locusts, the stripping locusts, and the cutting locusts.’” – Joel 2:25
Some passages of Scripture do more than encourage us. They awaken something within us. Joel 2:25 is one of those verses for me. It speaks directly to the pain of wasted years, missed opportunities, painful mistakes, and losses that appear impossible to recover.
The Word of God is alive and powerful. It carries hope into places where discouragement has settled and reminds us that loss does not have to write the final chapter of our lives. The same God who created the world by His Word is still able to heal, rebuild, and restore.
Perhaps you have lost something precious. It may be a job, a business, a relationship, an opportunity, your health, your confidence, or years you wish you could reclaim. Some losses came through circumstances beyond your control. Others may have resulted from disobedience, poor decisions, or ignorance. Whatever brought you to this place, God’s promise of restoration gives you a reason to believe that your present condition is not necessarily your permanent one.
This may be your season of restoration.
God Can Reach What Looks Beyond Recovery
There is a time to lose and a time to recover. When you are living through loss, however, recovery can feel impossible. The situation may appear hopeless, irreversible, or completely beyond repair. You may look at what remains and wonder how anything good could come from it.
This is where faith asks you to look beyond what you can presently see. Jesus called Lazarus out of the grave after he had been dead for four days. The people around Him saw a tomb and a body already buried. Jesus saw a situation that was still subject to the authority of God.
Your circumstances may be painful, but they are not greater than God. He may not restore everything in the exact form you expect, yet He can still bring healing, provision, direction, and renewed purpose from what appears ruined.
God Understands the Pain of Losing Something Precious
The promise in Joel is especially meaningful because loss is deeply painful. People who have lost loved ones, employment, businesses, homes, positions, marriages, or financial security know that the damage often reaches far beyond the thing that disappeared.
A major loss can affect a person emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Some people lose their desire to try again. Others continue functioning outwardly while slowly giving up inside. They may smile, work, attend church, and care for others, yet privately feel as though something within them is dying.
If that describes you, God’s Word offers hope and healing. Recovery does not require you to deny what happened or pretend the pain was insignificant. It begins by bringing your grief honestly before God and allowing Him to strengthen you one day at a time.
The death of someone you love is different from losing money, property, or a position. No new person can replace the one who died, and grief should never be treated as though it can simply be exchanged for another relationship. Still, God can surround you with people who bring companionship, kindness, and renewed joy. He can help you love again without erasing the memory of the person you lost.
New joy does not dishonor old love. Healing does not mean forgetting.
Believe God for Restoration
Joel 2 does not end with restoration alone. God also promises that His people will know He is among them and that their disgrace will not last forever. Restoration is therefore about more than receiving possessions or recovering opportunities. It is also about recognizing God’s presence in the middle of what once caused shame and sorrow.
I declare that you will recover what you have lost according to God’s will and purpose for your life. May your joy return. May your health, hope, confidence, relationships, opportunities, and resources be restored. May God redeem the years that disappointment, mistakes, hardship, and delay have taken from you.
You may not be able to return to the past, but God can lead you into a future He controls. He can give you the wisdom to rebuild, the strength to begin again, and the discernment to avoid the decisions that contributed to earlier losses.
This is not the end of your story. Trust God, follow His direction, and take the practical steps within your reach. The season that emptied your hands does not have the authority to empty your future.
May God restore your hope and lead you into a season of healing, recovery, and renewed purpose. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
