An Illinois woman who had her ovaries removed following a cancer treatment has been delivered of a set of identical twins. No, that wasn’t a typographical error. A woman without ovaries just had children again, leaving a lot of people puzzled.
After being diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer at age 34, Shelly Battista, of Arlington Heights, Illinois, discovered a lump while breastfeeding her first-born daughter in 2020, as reported in a press release from Northwestern Medicine’s Center for Fertility and Reproductive Medicine.
Additionally, she was diagnosed with what’s known as a “BRCA1 mutation,” which has the proclivity to lead to an increased risk of “other types of cancer.” Battista opted to have a double mastectomy, in addition to chemotherapy.
Unfortunately, chemotherapy created a condition called “Ovarian insufficiency” where the ovaries stop working before a woman reaches age 40. Battista had her ovaries and fallopian tubes surgically removed as well in order to protect herself from also developing ovarian cancer.
