Beyond Hair Loss: How Luciana Naldi Discovered Strength Within

For Luciana Naldi, losing her hair was not simply a physical change. It became a journey that forced her to reconsider how she viewed herself, beauty and personal strength.

A California native, mother of two sets of twins, former collegiate athlete, physical education teacher and basketball coach, Naldi was diagnosed with alopecia, a condition that caused her to lose her hair.

Because her hair loss was visible, she often found herself answering questions from people who knew her and even strangers who were curious about her appearance.

For the first 37 years of her life, Naldi had lived with hair. Then, for several years, she had to adjust to life without it.

Rather than allowing the experience to define her negatively, however, Naldi began to see it as an opportunity to discover a deeper sense of confidence.

She eventually decided to tell her story from beginning to end, not only to explain what happened to her but also to show how the experience positively changed the way she thought about herself and the lessons she shared with her children and athletes.

Basketball Taught Her That She Could Do Hard Things

Long before alopecia became part of her story, basketball had already taught Naldi one of life’s most important lessons: difficult things can be overcome.

Her father was a basketball coach, so some of her earliest memories involved going to the gym with him, staying after games and playing on the court while he completed his work.

The sights, sounds and even the smell of the gym became familiar and comforting to her.

But basketball gave her more than happy childhood memories. It gave her a place to develop courage.

Naldi explained that whenever she accomplished something difficult on the court, she experienced a sense of satisfaction. The more she practised, the more she began to understand that she was capable of doing difficult things.

That lesson eventually moved beyond basketball.

The confidence she developed while playing allowed her to experiment with qualities such as assertiveness, confidence and courage. Things she sometimes struggled to express in everyday life became easier to practice on the court. For Naldi, sport became a training ground for life.

The Lessons of the Court Followed Her Into Adulthood

The resilience, discipline and mental flexibility she developed as an athlete continued to influence her long after her playing days.

Those qualities helped her navigate her career, motherhood, teaching and coaching. She now tries to pass those lessons to the young people she works with.

Naldi encourages her athletes to explore parts of themselves that they may initially fear others will not accept. The basketball court allows them to become more confident, courageous and expressive.

Over time, she believes those qualities can move beyond sport and become part of who they are in everyday life.

This is one of the reasons she sees coaching as more than teaching basketball skills.

Every practice, every game and every challenge can contribute to the story a young person is writing about themselves.

Turning Personal Struggles Into Hope for Others

Naldi also believes that personal struggles can become a source of empathy. The experiences she has faced throughout her own life allow her to recognise similar struggles in the young people she teaches and coaches.

Instead of pretending that she has all the answers, she is willing to share her own vulnerabilities.

Her message to them is simple: “I have been through difficult things too, and things can get better.”

That kind of honesty can be powerful.

Young people do not always need someone to tell them that life will never be difficult.  Sometimes, they need someone who can acknowledge that difficult moments are real while also reminding them that those moments do not have to become the end of their story.

Naldi uses her experiences to offer precisely that kind of hope.

    Every Team Tells a Story

For Naldi, basketball is also a reflection of life.

She believes every team tells a story through the way its players warm up, interact with one another, respond to mistakes and celebrate success.

A team reveals its character when things go according to plan, but perhaps even more clearly when they do not.

When something unexpected happens during a game, players must decide how they will respond. Will they become discouraged? Will they blame one another? Or will they regroup and continue?

Naldi sees those moments as lessons in resilience.

The same is true in life. We cannot always control what happens to us, but we can influence how we respond. Adversity can reveal qualities that might otherwise remain hidden.

Choosing What Is Right Over What Others Think

One of Naldi’s most powerful lessons is about learning to make decisions based on personal values rather than fear of other people’s opinions.

She hopes her athletes will eventually approach difficult situations by asking themselves, “What do I think is the right thing to do at this moment?” That question is different from asking, “What will people think about me?”

Of course, other people’s needs and feelings sometimes matter when making decisions. But Naldi believes we should not allow the fear of judgment to completely determine the direction of our lives.

There are moments when we must step back, listen to ourselves and consider the person we want to become.

For her, that has been an important part of navigating life after alopecia.

    Finding Beauty and Strength Within

Naldi’s story ultimately goes beyond hair loss.

Her experience challenged the idea that confidence and beauty must depend on physical appearance. Through her journey, she discovered that a person’s sense of worth can come from much deeper places.

The basketball court had already taught her that she could face difficult challenges. Alopecia gave her another opportunity to put that lesson into practice.

Instead of seeing herself only through what had changed physically, she began to recognise the strength, resilience and courage that had been developing within her all along.

Her story also demonstrates how one person’s struggle can become a source of encouragement for others.

Your Hardest Chapter Is Not Your Whole Story

Life will sometimes take away things we thought were essential to who we are. It may challenge our confidence, change our plans or place us in situations we never expected.

But difficult seasons do not have to define the entire story.

Luciana Naldi’s journey reminds us that strength is often discovered when we are forced to confront what we cannot control. The things that test us can also teach us resilience. The experiences that make us vulnerable can deepen our compassion. And the challenges we overcome can eventually become encouragement for someone else.

Perhaps the greatest lesson is this: you do not have to wait until life becomes easy before you believe you are strong.

Sometimes, strength begins with simply taking the next step.

Like an athlete returning to the court after a difficult moment, we can choose to keep going, learn from what happened and become more confident with every step.

The goal is not to live a life without challenges. It is to become the kind of person who can face those challenges without losing sight of who they are becoming.

Your appearance, circumstances or plans may change, but the courage you develop within yourself can become a strength that carries you through every chapter of your life.
