McKinley grew up in a Christian home in Iowa, then moved to Minnesota where she worked with disabled people for many years. It was her passion and she loved her job. A tragic workplace accident in 1993 left her partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. She suffered severe pain from a neurological disorder called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) which left her neck and spine twisted. She suffered from this condition for over 18 years, all the while many doctors at the Mayo Clinic trying all types of treatments for her, but to no avail. All throughout her suffering, McKinley remained faithful, praising God through her pain and never losing hope or faith.
